Pfizer Inc. on Tuesday reported the first shipment of a generic version of Viagra to its US pharmacy.
The company said Viagra, which will be sold under the brand name Viagra Connect, will contain sildenafil citrate, the same active ingredient used in the popular erectile dysfunction drug Viagra.

The company said the erectile dysfunction drug is available in generic form and can be ordered through pharmacies.

It said Pfizer Inc. will conduct an online survey of US consumers to identify potential online pharmacies that sell the generic version of the drug.
The online pharmacy will be run by a team of researchers from University of Maryland's School of Pharmacy. The team will compare the prices of several popular erectile dysfunction drugs, and will then recommend which pharmacies are best suited to ordering the new medication.
A total of 2,812 pharmacies will be randomly selected by the online pharmacy, according to Pfizer. Pfizer said some pharmacies offer more than one dose of the generic version of Viagra.
Pfizer is developing the new medication in collaboration with Eli Lilly and Co. to sell the drug in the US, and plans to launch the generic in the next three months, according to its statement.

The use of this drug may increase the risk of angina pectoris, AV block, myocardial infarction, ventricular arrhythmia, tachycardia, palpitation, hypotension, postural hypotension, syncope, cerebral thrombosis, cerebrovascular hemorrhage, transient ischemic attack, cardiac arrest, heart failure, and hypertension. These events can occur during or after sexual activity.
Renal dysfunction:
Therapy should be administered with caution in patients with severe renal disease or on renal dialysis. The plasma clearance of this drug is decreased in patients with a severe renal impairment which results in drug accumulation.
Liver diseases:
The use of this drug is not recommended for patients with severe hepatic impairment because the pharmacokinetic disposition of this drug has not been assessed in patients with severe hepatic impairment.

The California Attorney General’s Office is currently investigating the possibility that Viagra and other erectile dysfunction drugs, which have been in the market since 1998, are being sold without prescription in Los Angeles County.
